Requested listing on the National Park Service's Network to Freedom:
Stephen Smith, who as the richest black man in America at the time, both helped fund the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee (the Underground Railroad organization) and directly helped slaves escape. Harriet Tubman worked in Cape May for a number of summers to fund her travels South to bring to freedom her family and others. One family's oral history puts her in the Stephen Smith house. There are also letters between two Underground Railroad leaders talking about Tubman in Cape May, as well as documented cases of escaped slaves arranging on Cape May beaches in their effort to be free.
